Safe Shopping Online

Shopping online is as safe as shopping on the High street, you just need to take the same precautions online as you would in the high street. You wouldn’t give your credit card details to some one who didn’t look right, but how do you tell on the web?

Follow these tips from the Trading Standards: UK

  • Use sites you know or which have been recommended
  • Shop around for the best deals and prices
  • Be careful when you give your credit or debit card details. Make sure there is a closed padlock sign plock02 at the bottom of the screen (this means that you are using a secure server)
  • Keep a record of the supplier’s phone number and postal address, (If they don’t provide this information on screen, then it’s probably best not to do business with them).
  • Print out the order, confirmation message and terms and conditions.
  • High street consumer rights apply, goods must be of satisfactory quality, adverts and descriptions must not be misleading.
  • In some cases you are entitled to a ‘cooling off’ period where you can change your mind and get a refund within seven working days.
  • Items must be delivered within 30 days unless otherwise agreed.
  • If you buy from EU countries you have many of the rights you have in the UK.
  • Don’t assume a company is based in the UK just because the web address has UK in it.
  • If you buy from abroad your contract will be in the country where the trader is and it may be very difficult to get any complaint dealt with or take legal action.

If you want further advice about shopping online see www.consumerdirect.gov.uk

When you shop online you generally use a credit or debit card so check with your issuing bank what their online guarantees are.
